Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 due to its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in Phoenix because it’ll help make your AC perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is completely phased out. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Dial One Mears Air Conditioning & Heating Inc work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. You should also steer clear of”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
