Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do Before Calling for Furnace Repair

October 07, 2015

You can’t count on the weather in Phoenix, but one thing the team at Dial One Mears Air Conditioning & Heating Inc wants you to be able to trust in is your heating and cooling system. Having a cozy home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you need all year. When your furnace is having problems you may think that means a furnace repair can be expected in your future. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, dependable self lately, there are a couple of things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Dial One Mears Air Conditioning & Heating Inc.

Check the Thermostat

We have had calls where all we had to do was switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While setting the thermostat for the season, it’s easy for a homeowner to forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you would like it to do.

Something else to look at while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. Almost all digital thermostats are equipped with a low battery warning, but if some time has passed since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a switch. It’s another simple fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of troubles. Not only will a dirty filter inhibit your system’s efficiency and block air flow, it could also cause an abrupt breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is simple and it can play a huge role in keeping your system running at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to look at is the breaker for your furnace. Sometimes a problem can be as minor as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A frequent misconception is that a homeowner should shut the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair down the line. Closed vents create higher pressure inside your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.
